Blood In Her Veins Blog Tour/Excerpt/Giveaway

Excerpt

I lifted one batch of pages and saw the photo of an old man, maybe in

his seventies, with sun-lined skin, sun spots, raised and rough age spots,

kinda brown and freckled all over. Faded blue eyes. He was mostly bald. A

narrow-eyed, mean-looking man, the kind who was raised on whuppin’s,

hardtack, and moonshine, and who hated the world. I flipped through the

three attached pages. The info said his name was Colonel Ernest Jackson,

but there was no mention of military service in the scant record.

The second file showed a digital photo of the vamp in question, Heyda

Cohen. She was tiny and very beautiful. Vamps offered people the change

for lots of reasons, and personal beauty was high on the list. But Heyda’s

intelligent, piercing eyes suggested that she was special in the other ways

as well.

“Heyda was in charge of my personal security and she was contacted

by that human man”— Ming pointed at his photo—“a communication

that carried a threat to me. She tracked him.” Ming’s speech, accented by

her native Asian language, sped up and her syntax grew more fractured.

“Then she met with that human and three of his followers. In a park. In

the city. Then she went away with him. Without contacting us or alerting

her support team, who were waiting in the park, watching. They allowed

her to leave, as she did not appear distressed. We do not know why she

left with him. She did not come home afterward.”

Suddenly Ming was all but wringing her hands, leaning toward me in her chair,

shoulders tense. “The man refuses to see us. Refuses to allow us to see her. He hides in his

compound and . . .” She glanced up at her primo, and her face crumpled.

Her shoulders went up high, and Cai placed a hand on one in tender

concern.

Interview with Cheryl Kaye Tardif – writing

Do you have a set time that you write each day, or do you wait to be inspired?

I write when I can. Sometimes I will plan to write and set a time frame for doing so.

Do you plan out the entire book before you begin writing, or do you just sit down and write whatever comes to mind?

I always know what happens in the beginning and end, plus a few major scenes in between. I’ll often start writing, and then make notes of anything I don’t want to forget. I don’t do a rigid synopsis or outline though. Usually I allow a plot idea to ferment a bit. The strongest ones are the ones I make notes on.

How do you deal with that dreaded “Writer’s Block”?

I don’t have to deal with it. I don’t get it. Ever. When I decide I need to write something, no matter if it’s fiction or non-fiction, or even an interview, the words come. Though I’ve heard that some writers really struggle at times with the words or the story, I think many are really afflicted by “Procrastination Block.” I try not to procrastinate; I’m very organized. I have to be. Otherwise I think I’d go nuts. J

Are you currently working on another book? Would you tell us a bit about it?

I’m working on book 3 in my Divine series. DIVINE SANCTUARY. It’s about a series of murders and their connections to a cult in British Columbia. Psychic agent Jasi McLellan and her team of covert agents head up the investigation, and it’s smokin’ hot!

What new doors has your writing opened up for you? Were there any opportunities that you had never considered before?

Writing has opened many doors. Most recently, I’ve had a number of foreign rights deals. These translations came out in 2012 and 2013. I’ve also been contacted by many in the film industry and came very close to a couple of film deals. Whale Song and Children of the Fog have really interested producers and directors. They’d make awesome movies! So would SUBMERGED. J

Do you have any advice for writers?

Write because you love writing. Learn everything about writing. Get your work edited by someone else. Learn the business of publishing. And above all, never, ever give up. If writing is your passion, write!

From Cheryl Kaye Tardif, the international bestselling author that brought you CHILDREN OF THE FOG, comes a terrifying new thriller that will leave you breathless…

SUBMERGED

Submerged reads like an approaching storm, full of darkness, dread and electricity. Prepare for your skin to crawl.”

FRACTURED SOUL BLOG TOUR-AUTHOR INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY

Rachel McClellan

Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

CEDAR FORT HAS BEEN GRACIOUS TO THEIR READERS AND IS GIVING AWAY AN E-COPY OF FRACTURED SOUL. TO ENTER, FILL OUT THE RAFFLECOPTER BELOW

What/who inspired you to become a writer??
I’ve always enjoyed writing and wrote all the time, but I never believed I could become an author. Honestly, I didn’t think I was good enough, but then a trip to Ireland changed everything. Something there helped me grow a pair of ovaries to just go for it. So I guess you could say Ireland inspired me.

Do you have a favorite genre of book that you like to read/write? If so, why??
I love anything related to the supernatural: urban fantasy, paranormal, horror, etc. Life can be incredibly hard so I like “escaping” to worlds were good triumphs over evil, where a normal person can suddenly be the most important person in the world, where our imagination is pushed to the limits and on and on.

What helping aids do you use to focus when you write? Music?? Nature???
Two things are a must have: Music (dark, moody stuff) and my Alphasmart which is keyboard with four lines of visible text at the top. These two items go everywhere with me.

What character(s) of your book, Fractured Soul do you relate to the most??
Llona and Liam. I want to be the best possible person I can be, but there are times when it’s hard to keep fighting, keep putting on a brave face when you’re struggling inside. I was recently diagnosed with MS so this has come to mean a lot more to me.

What words of wisdom would you like to share with aspiring writers like myself?
If writing really is a passion, you must research everything about it. Stalk agents blogs, study other author’s novels, read books on writing, and encourage, even seek out, criticism of your work. It’s the only way you’ll get better.

How do you visualize your stories?? In pictures?? Conversations? Dreams?
They come to me in pictures, the exact way I’d see them as if on a movie screen. That’s why I like using the Alphasmart. With so few lines of visible text, it prevents me from being tempted to edit as I go. I can write as fast as my fingers can type.

What are your writing goals for the next 5 years??
I want at least one book a year published, which means I need to write a lot. I’d even like to get into screenwriting.

How long did it take you to write Fractured Soul? What/who inspired these books??
It took about six months and then another three to edit it. What inspired me to write this series? I wanted to write something different. I thought of all the supernatural beasties that “exist” in our world. As the little wheels in my brain turned, I thought it would be cool to have a girl who could use light as a power. Then when I overheard someone talking about the aura’s surrounding a person, I sort of put the two together. Just like peanut butter and chocolate, it turned pretty good.

If you could have dinner with someone dead or alive, famous or not famous, who would it be and why??
My great, great and so on, great aunt was Mary Surratt, the first woman legally hung in the USA for her role as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. She always claimed she was innocent as did a few others. I’d like to know the truth.

Let’s do something fun…write something about each of the next 10 words in 10 words or less.

Movement
What’s involved with my CrossFit workouts.

Fantasy
Hugh Jackman.

Chaos
When all my kids get home from school.

Energy

Bleh.

Balance
Something I’m always striving for.

Synchronicity
A very beautiful word.

Imagination
The most important thing that helps me write.

Invention
Tampons rock.

Freedom
Date night. Or using the bathroom.

Intelligence
Something I used to have before four kids.

If you found yourself on a deserted island, what 10 things would you take and why?
A yacht so I can get off when I feel like my kids might need me.
A TV so I don’t miss any of my favorite shows.
My mattress because I want to be comfortable.
A dirtbike because, um, yeah, so fun.
An Olive Garden so I will always have good food.
My husband so I don’t get “frustrated”.
An Alphasmart so I can still write.
A metal detector so I can find the buried treasure.
Prozac in case I start going all “Lord of the Flies”
A full tool chest so my husband won’t be bored, or more like so he can build me a sweet home.

How do you write your books?? Are you by the seat of your pants writer or do you plot out your books in advance??
A combination of both. I always know the ending before I start any novel. Then from there I’ll plan out the next few scenes ahead of time, but that’s as far as I go when it comes to organization.

And last by not least, if you could time travel what period of the history of future would you go to??
I love the beauty of the Downtown Abbey times, but I’d get bored and would be pissed that I couldn’t do dude stuff and have wild adventures. That’s why I like right now. As a woman, I’m not limited to what I can do and experience. I hope it’s still that way in the future, but since I have no way of knowing, I wouldn’t want to go there.

Feel free to any other interesting tidbits about yourself 🙂 Please include your social media links.

Upload Blog Tour-Guest Post The Origin of a Character

Today, I’m welcoming Collin Tobin, author of Upload. Pull up a chair of your choice, grab a beverage from the bar, and enjoy this fascinating read about the Origin of a Character.

ENTER  the Raffle-copter giveaway below

The Origin of a Character: Bennie (from Upload)

Since I was young, I had always day dreamt I was born with some specific, secret malady that my parents kept  from me. I’m not sure why I wanted this—perhaps to excuse myself for an occasional bad grade, for laziness, for my tendency to lose myself in thought? Or perhaps instead I had hoped, as with all Hollywood-born handicaps and injuries, this vulnerability would somehow translate into something like a superpower? Maybe it would mean I would eventually pitch a baseball at 120 MPH? Maybe I would to be 1,000? Anything might happen.

But in the end, I lost the courage to hope for such a secret curse. After all, I had a big enough challenge already that didn’t seem physical, but purely mental: intense and inexplicable shyness. My parents readily confessed to having a hard time with this affect, but they remained eternally loving, patient, and forgiving throughout. As a brief example, my father once volunteered one morning to drop me off at preschool. Once. Minutes later we both returned home defeated, my father sheepishly working his way back up to our sidewalk with me in tow, eight in the morning on a Monday, to my mother’s crossed arms and shaking head.

So naturally, later in early grade school, when I found myself routinely plucked out of the middle of class to go to seemingly unimportant, sedate field trips with three other kids, I figured I had been placed in some kind of special needs group for the socially challenged. We’d take extremely mundane trips in this woman’s minivan to feed the surly geese at a local pond, take extremely hesitant nature walks through the woods in November, or boost the annual attendance to Massachusetts’ least popular museums by 100%. An aura of awkwardness, fear, but also cautious wanderlust pervaded the group. Later, I felt nostalgic for these outings when watching McMurphy and fellow patients on their field trips in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. These weren’t trips a self-respecting field trip coordinator would organize. But I took these trips in stride, and somehow caught up on, or was forgiven, the missed assignments.

It wasn’t until I was well into my teens that I learned I wasn’t included in this group to work on my shyness, or any other of my pet social ineptitudes. Almost as an afterthought, my mother told me she had been approached and asked if I could join this group because I was shown to be a friendly, peaceful, and unintimidating presence. The group was indeed a collection of socially challenged students, and I was somehow thrown in as lubricant. Apparently, I was social tofu. But because of this prolonged exposure, I developed a taste for such personalities, these misfits, these characters.

After this experience, I actively searched out these people, throughout my schooling and the rest of my life. This is where the social gold lay: on the sideliners. I sought out these quiet, introspective kids, the outcasts that routinely mocked for being different. These were the kids that had developed into truly interesting people, almost out of pure necessity. They had to be self-entertaining. There was the kid I found trapped under the gallows of the jungle gym, openly sobbing with his hands shoved in his pockets, surrounded by a circle of larger boys who were kicking dirt on his brand-new neon orange sneakers. There was the boy routinely mocked on the playground for being plagued with spontaneous nosebleeds and intense allergies, who sneezed out bloody snot that he unselfconsciously allowed to hang like crucified snails from his cheeks. Okay, not everyone had something to offer. There was the quiet boy in class that interacted with no one, and no thing, except his precious colored pencil box and drawing pad. As I eventually learned, chances were, if I befriended these kids, and gained their trust, whole new worlds would open up to me.

This is Bennie Welch from in Upload. My main character, Jay Brooks, has befriended Bennie for exactly the same reasons. Bennie exposes Jay to new worlds: the underground world of computer hacking, rave parties, what it’s like be handicapped, what it feels like to be truly lonely, and finally, what it means to be passionate about something by sharing with Jay his pet project, which you’ll discover in the book, that he’s named after the Greek personification of memory: Mnemosyne.

Bennie is an amalgamation of all those odd and interesting friends I’ve made in the past; all those interesting, self-possessed, cast-off people. But just as with the software and hardware Bennie likes to play with in his lonesome basement, I’ve made some upgrades to these people. Why not, since I can? Bennie is a bit too brash. He’s also a bit too cocky for his own good. Also, he refuses to meekly accept his social station along the sidelines. Lastly, Bennie possesses a keen sense of righteousness and justice, and along with it, to back those ideals up, more courage and loyalty than any of us could truly expect from ourselves.
