FRACTURED SOUL BLOG TOUR-AUTHOR INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY

Rachel McClellan

Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

CEDAR FORT HAS BEEN GRACIOUS TO THEIR READERS AND IS GIVING AWAY AN E-COPY OF FRACTURED SOUL. TO ENTER, FILL OUT THE RAFFLECOPTER BELOW

What/who inspired you to become a writer??
I’ve always enjoyed writing and wrote all the time, but I never believed I could become an author. Honestly, I didn’t think I was good enough, but then a trip to Ireland changed everything. Something there helped me grow a pair of ovaries to just go for it. So I guess you could say Ireland inspired me.

Do you have a favorite genre of book that you like to read/write? If so, why??
I love anything related to the supernatural: urban fantasy, paranormal, horror, etc. Life can be incredibly hard so I like “escaping” to worlds were good triumphs over evil, where a normal person can suddenly be the most important person in the world, where our imagination is pushed to the limits and on and on.

What helping aids do you use to focus when you write? Music?? Nature???
Two things are a must have: Music (dark, moody stuff) and my Alphasmart which is keyboard with four lines of visible text at the top. These two items go everywhere with me.

What character(s) of your book, Fractured Soul do you relate to the most??
Llona and Liam. I want to be the best possible person I can be, but there are times when it’s hard to keep fighting, keep putting on a brave face when you’re struggling inside. I was recently diagnosed with MS so this has come to mean a lot more to me.

What words of wisdom would you like to share with aspiring writers like myself?
If writing really is a passion, you must research everything about it. Stalk agents blogs, study other author’s novels, read books on writing, and encourage, even seek out, criticism of your work. It’s the only way you’ll get better.

How do you visualize your stories?? In pictures?? Conversations? Dreams?
They come to me in pictures, the exact way I’d see them as if on a movie screen. That’s why I like using the Alphasmart. With so few lines of visible text, it prevents me from being tempted to edit as I go. I can write as fast as my fingers can type.

What are your writing goals for the next 5 years??
I want at least one book a year published, which means I need to write a lot. I’d even like to get into screenwriting.

How long did it take you to write Fractured Soul? What/who inspired these books??
It took about six months and then another three to edit it. What inspired me to write this series? I wanted to write something different. I thought of all the supernatural beasties that “exist” in our world. As the little wheels in my brain turned, I thought it would be cool to have a girl who could use light as a power. Then when I overheard someone talking about the aura’s surrounding a person, I sort of put the two together. Just like peanut butter and chocolate, it turned pretty good.

If you could have dinner with someone dead or alive, famous or not famous, who would it be and why??
My great, great and so on, great aunt was Mary Surratt, the first woman legally hung in the USA for her role as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. She always claimed she was innocent as did a few others. I’d like to know the truth.

Let’s do something fun…write something about each of the next 10 words in 10 words or less.

Movement
What’s involved with my CrossFit workouts.

Fantasy
Hugh Jackman.

Chaos
When all my kids get home from school.

Energy

Bleh.

Balance
Something I’m always striving for.

Synchronicity
A very beautiful word.

Imagination
The most important thing that helps me write.

Invention
Tampons rock.

Freedom
Date night. Or using the bathroom.

Intelligence
Something I used to have before four kids.

If you found yourself on a deserted island, what 10 things would you take and why?
A yacht so I can get off when I feel like my kids might need me.
A TV so I don’t miss any of my favorite shows.
My mattress because I want to be comfortable.
A dirtbike because, um, yeah, so fun.
An Olive Garden so I will always have good food.
My husband so I don’t get “frustrated”.
An Alphasmart so I can still write.
A metal detector so I can find the buried treasure.
Prozac in case I start going all “Lord of the Flies”
A full tool chest so my husband won’t be bored, or more like so he can build me a sweet home.

How do you write your books?? Are you by the seat of your pants writer or do you plot out your books in advance??
A combination of both. I always know the ending before I start any novel. Then from there I’ll plan out the next few scenes ahead of time, but that’s as far as I go when it comes to organization.

And last by not least, if you could time travel what period of the history of future would you go to??
I love the beauty of the Downtown Abbey times, but I’d get bored and would be pissed that I couldn’t do dude stuff and have wild adventures. That’s why I like right now. As a woman, I’m not limited to what I can do and experience. I hope it’s still that way in the future, but since I have no way of knowing, I wouldn’t want to go there.

Feel free to any other interesting tidbits about yourself 🙂 Please include your social media links.

The Summer ‘Cottages’ of the ‘Four Hundred Club’

Miss June ignored his remarks and continued her ‘who’s who’ tour of American society. “Now, Mrs. Astor never liked the Vanderbilt family. She thinks they’re basically businessmen – a very common lot. But Alva Vanderbilt built a stunning cottage in Newport, Rhode Island that rivals Beechwood. It’s absolutely huge. I’ve never been inside, but from what little I could gather from Mitchell, the thing is massive. Supposedly every room is filled with crystal, bronze statues, and expensive works of art…”

In Gilded Wings, as the angel/warrior team find themselves taking a journey through one of the most famous times in American History. this is the first we hear of the stunning summer ‘cottages’ that the elite of the Gilded Age owned. Back then, the women focused on throwing parties that made them the most famous and beloved; whereas the men became captains of industry – sometimes by very underhanded means.

TheBreakers

Newport, Rhode Island was the ‘summer’ scene for the elite and pompous. Here, they would build houses to rival one another, with each female of the family wanting to make sure theirs was the grandest, most opulent of them all. In fact, the two most famous heads of household at the time – Mrs. Astor and Mrs. Vanderbilt – kept their competition going for quite some time. Vanderbilt’s mansion – The Breakers – was built with only the best; marble imported from Italy and Africa, plus rare woods and mosaics from countries around the world filled the place. And what upset Mrs. Astor the most was that, “if the Gilded Age were to be summed up by a single house, that house would have to be The Breakers,” seeing as that it was the largest, most ‘gilded’ house at the time.

Beechwood

Beechwood was Astor’s mansion; the home that Emily and Matthew find themselves entering in order to mingle in the famous Beechwood ballroom. Not only does Emily have to deal with the fact that she’s walked into a world she doesn’t understand, but here she must also face the fact that two very important men – her warrior/partner and her first love – are standing beside her glittering far more brightly than the excessive gold that seems to line every wall and rest on every table.

Built in 1851, Beechwood was the ‘show place’ for many of Mrs. Astor’s dinner parties. From a library to a dining room to a music room with wallpaper that was imported from Paris – the house had it all. After her son, John’s, death on the Titanic, the house was passed on to his widow who turned the entire third floor into her walk-in closet. (Yup, that’s the rich!)

The house – like everything in the Gilded Age, boasted two sides – one where the rich family lived and then the servant’s side, which included kitchens and quarters, as well as an area for the children to live.

Trust me, it’s a whole lot of fun to see the angel/warrior team surrounded by this ‘tacky’ opulence that still has never gone out of style.

Don’t believe me? My Dad was a caretaker on a very wealthy property in CT. The wallpaper in the dining room was hand-painted and imported – scenes of a fox hunt with bloody fox carcasses hanging off their horses. Can you imagine eating dinner in that room?

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy

EXCERPT FOR THE READ ALONG

She hid behind Drew when the door opened revealing a white-haired man on the top step. His face was pinched and his nose was wrinkled, as if he was having a hard time breathing in the night air. “Parrish.” His voice was as cold as the wind.
“Ah, another warm welcome. You never disappoint. Good evening, Brighton.”
“You are late. The household has retired.”
“As I hope you will one day very soon, old man.” Drew pushed his way over the threshold. Keeping a strong hold on Anya’s wrist, he dragged her in behind him, as she pulled Gregori in last, making him stumble with her sudden forceful movement.
Drew’s voice sounded angry in Anya’s ears, “Mr. Carrow knows we’re coming. He sent back word to me on the Island this afternoon.”
“He thought you’d be arriving quicker.”
Anya’s stomach churned at the man’s blatantly disgusted tone.
“I doubt that,” Drew’s usual soothing voice rose an octave. “He knows I stay there until the very last American is processed through.”
“Record numbers again, I suppose?”
Anya could make out the sarcasm embedded in his well-educated accent. It was as if she could feel her soul cringe, feeling as if she’d gone up against a bristling, snooty servant once before.

Gilded Wings Summary

The Beloved Angel-Warrior Team from Until Next Time Returns!
When Matt and Emily are sent on their second mission they have no idea how truly dark human nature can become…
Emily never wanted to face humans again. With the heartache that went on down below, she’s still trying to figure out how to save souls that don’t deserve saving. The only one she wants to see again is Jason – the young man she fell in love with who became the soulmate she simply can’t forget…
Matt was trained to protect and defend the souls down below. Longing to feel the heartfelt emotions that come from being human, Matt wants nothing more than to have just one life – one chance – to live and love the girl of his dreams…
The powerful team find themselves in a brand new century, living in the Gilded Age of New York City. Emily takes over the body of Anya, a young Russian girl who arrives on Ellis Island after a hideous tragedy. There she meets up with a strangely familiar young man by the name of Drew Parrish, who helps Anya survive in an unknown world of luxury, snobbery and…obsession.
What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Once a quiet and kind boy, he’s now part of the ‘Four Hundred Club,’ and wants nothing more than to be among the most admired as he climbs the shaky ladder of society’s elite.
As two worlds merge, Emily and Matt struggle under the weight of their “Gilded Wings.” Not only will they have to figure out who they should fight to save, but they must also face a romantic choice that could destroy them both.

Until Next Time: The Angel Chronicles, Book 1 Summary

How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?
Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the ‘life’ they’ve been assigned. What they don’t realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.
When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz’s establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel’s path and a warrior’s plans.
From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that’s ripping them apart.

Thanks Heather for having me over to your blog!

Top 10 List Of Things To Be Thankful For – As A Writer

I’m thankful for books. Without them I really doubt I would be writing now.

I’m thankful for movies, music and TV shows. For the same reason.

I’m thankful for the fact that my brain comes up with some crazy stuff that enables me to sit down and create things. Not so thankful that it also provides rather a lot of procrastination. And can sometimes feel like a truculent child, ‘I don’t want to do it mom!’

I’m thankful for all of the writers I have met – mostly online, some in person. It is really brilliant to communicate with people you can be yourself with, and who won’t look at you funny when you tell them what you are working on.

I’m thankful for the school year. Which means that I get to snatch some writing time in peace without the kids around.

I’m thankful for tea and chocolate. They keep me going.

I’m thankful for the times when it rains. I find it very soothing while I’m writing.

I’m thankful for the fact that I’m so organised. Some would call it anal. But it means that all of my research, plotting and planning is done in advance.

I’m thankful for my cats. They keep me company while I write.

I’m thankful for many more things, like my wonderful publishers, Untold Press, who are a complete joy to work with. The opportunities and chances I have been given. The hard work that is so worth it in the end. I’m also thankful for Heather for coming up with such a great topic. It really made me think about writing and how much I love it.

The blurb:

Lucretia’s life as an astronomer is quickly turned on its head by her eldest brother when he is commanded by the king to build the grandest telescope in the land. Her nights spent on rooftops gazing at the stars are replaced by adventure as the family move to be nearer the king. In a race to build the Forty-foot telescope on time, misfortunes take their toll. The lady astronomer finds court life to be more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Can she find the strength inside to overcome the obstacles threatening her destiny? Only the stars will tell.

You can purchase The Lady Astronomer on

Amazon USA and Amazon UK.

AMAZON-USA

AMAZON-UK

A few facts:

I wrote The Lady Astronomer for my eldest son – he was jealous that I had used my younger son’s name in something else I was writing.

I work with an Astronomer on books that require his expert knowledge – the idea for The Lady Astronomer came to me while reading another book that he recommended I read.

The Lady Astronomer is inspired by the life of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848). She suffered from both Smallpox and Typhus, was a milliner, soprano, her brother William’s Assistant – he discovered Uranus, then known as George’s Star for the King who funded the build of the ‘Great Forty-Foot’ telescope – and most importantly, perhaps, became the first woman in recorded history to discover a comet. Not to mention the first woman in the UK to receive a working wage, from the King if you don’t mind.

Publisher:

The Lady Astronomer was published by Untold Press www.untoldpress.com on 26th September 2012. It is currently available as an eBook, and will be out as a paperback later on in the year.

About the Author
I’m a strange old soul who prefers to write fiction stories because they offer so much freedom in so many ways. In a world that has so many restrictions to a spiritual mind it feels good to float on the wings of fiction because there is no one dictating rules and regulations, just good old-fashioned freedom. I have always been aware of the invisible side of life and spent many of my early years working extra hard to shut the doorway. This led to a very unhappy incomplete way of thinking; eventually due to ill heath, I found myself looking within and realised that I couldn’t run away from myself any longer. I came to a crossroads: live in fear of the other side or learn to understand it; I chose the second option.

Managing Uncle Zed

Author Camille Picott writing as Billy Long, a character from Sulan

A Guest Post for Heather & Earth’s Book Nook

September 24, 2012

Most days, it’s just me and Uncle Zed. Mom only comes home once a month from her job, so it’s up to me to take care of my uncle. He’s a retired mercenary. Before I was born, he was captured by a North Korean corporation and tortured pretty bad. Almost twenty years later, he’s still got PTSD. He has some pretty rough days, but I’ve figured some good ways to keep him calm.

1. Keep track of the land mines

Uncle Zed is obsessed with landmines. Luckily, we live on 200 acres in Humboldt County. Zed can go nuts and bury his landmines anywhere he wants on our property. His current favorites are the 76Qs from Anderson Arms. They spray a neural gas that paralyzes its victims for up to thirty minutes. He’s got some of the old fashioned kind that blow up, but after he killed a few deer Zed stopped using them.

I made one rule about landmines: Zed is not allowed to bury them unless I’m with him to plot the locations on my tablet. He’s pretty calm most days, so long as he can go out and bury half a dozen of them.

2. Help him stock up on ammunitions

Zed has an extreme fear of running out of firearms and being attacked. Once, when Mom was away on a job for two months, I helped Zed install a hidden fallout bunker on our property. (Zed and I have funds that Mom doesn’t know about. I make black technology and he sells it.) Anyway, we cleaned out our account to install the bunker. It was totally worth it. Now we have a place to put all the weapons that Zed buys and Mom never has to know about them. Zed is calm because he has lots of guns and explosives and feels safe, and Mom is happy because Zed is calm. Life is good with the fallout bunker.

3. Trick him into taking his medication

Zed always makes excuses for not taking his medication. Usually I just threaten to rat him out to Mom. That usually gets him to take it, but sometimes he’ll spit them out when he thinks I’m not looking. Then I remind him he’s a better shot when he’s had his meds. That always gets the pill down his throat.

I know most people wouldn’t approve of the way I manage Uncle Zed. I say, why fix a system that isn’t broken? Zed is pretty happy and calm most days. Sure, every once in a while he’ll have a bad freak-out session. Those are the days he sneaks into the forest in full mercenary gear and spends hours shooting at imaginary attackers. But those days are few and far between. Most days, Zed is happy to hang out in his bunker and polish his guns. On really good days, I hear him singing to himself.
