Tales from Harborsmouth by E.J. Stevens Review

I’ve been a fan of Ivy Granger since I met E.J. at a reader’s convention a few years ago. I love all her books and it’s nice to see a short story collection connecting and intertwining with the other books in the series.

I loved reading about Ivy Granger’s adventures and it further increases my love for Ivy and I enjoy seeing her growth throughout the series

Tales from Harborsmouth Cover

BLURB:

Tales from Harborsmouth is the first time the Ivy Granger novellas are in one collection and features two exclusive short stories the series prequel Frostbite and the newest Ivy Granger tale Thrill on Joysen Hill.
FROSTBITE (Ivy Granger #0.5)

In this Ivy Granger prequel, join Ivy and Jinx on a disturbing case that leads down a dead-end alley to a house ravaged by time and circumstance.

Everyone knows that there’s no such thing as ghosts, but when a client claims that her house is being haunted, Ivy tries to keep her mind open and her weapons handy. If her psychic gifts and recent cases have taught her anything, it’s that you’re better off arming yourself for the unexpected. Anything is possible in Harborsmouth.

BLOOD AND MISTLETOE (Ivy Granger #1.5)

Holidays are worse than a full moon for making people crazy. In Harborsmouth, where many of the residents are undead vampires or monstrous fae, the combination may prove deadly.

Holidays are Hell, a point driven home when a certain demon attorney returns with information regarding a series of bloody murders. Five Harborsmouth residents have been killed and every victim has one thing in common—they are fae. Whoever is killing faeries must be stopped, but they only leave one clue behind—a piece of mistletoe floating in a pool of the victim’s blood. The holidays just got interesting.

CLUB NEXUS (Ivy Granger #2.5)

A demon, a human, an Unseelie faerie, and a vampire walk into a bar…

These four intertwining short stories are set in Club Nexus, the hidden haunt of Harborsmouth’s paranormal underworld.

Iced:  A bargain gone wrong leads a highborn Unseelie faerie to life as an enslaved bartender with a taste for revenge.

Dusted:  Being a highly skilled predator doesn’t necessarily put you at the top of the food chain at Club Nexus. A southern vampire with a hankering for blood and wanton violence may have bit off more than he can chew.

Demonized:  The demon attorney we love to hate has his eye on a certain rockabilly human. Too bad she’s brought a crossbow loaded with holy water dipped bolts for this night on the town.

Jinxed:  Just when Jinx needs a carefree girl’s night out with Ivy, a smoking hot demon tries to buy her a drink. She really is the unluckiest human on the planet.

THRILL ON JOYSEN HILL (Ivy Granger #5.5)

Few places are as rife with opportunity or as fraught with danger as Harborsmouth’s notorious Joysen Hill.

Vampires own the real estate, and even the most ruthless human thugs won’t venture out after dark, but when Torn gets stuck babysitting, he can only think of one place in Harborsmouth interesting enough to take a demon toddler, a teenage bridge troll, and a grouchy hearth brownie.  What happens next substantiates the city’s advertising slogan.  No matter who or what you are, no matter how young or old, you can find your thrill on Joysen Hill.

FROSTBITE (Ivy Granger #0.5)
This prequel is a good starting point if you haven’t read the series yet. It gives you the origins of Ivy Granger. I love learning a bit about where her personality and history comes in.

I would recommend this to anyone who hasn’t read the book series yet to give you a taste of the crazy world of Ivy Granger. I love Jinx and feel she is more than just a sidekick, she is Ivy’s base and keeps her grounded when the world is going nuts.

BLOOD AND MISTLETOE (Ivy Granger #1.5)

I love this story especially for the Yuletide theme. This story really helps you get to know about Ivy and introduces you to more of her “adopted “family.

It also shows that there is no rest for the wicked even for the holidays. A dose of fun and mystery as Ivy tries to enjoy the holidays whilst in the midst of a murder investigation.

CLUB NEXUS (Ivy Granger #2.5)

This is my favorite story out of the whole book. I love the idea of stories within stories and seeing things from the supporting characters point of view. I also love that it ties things together as you see once you get to the end of the story. I hope to see more stories from the supporting characters viewpoints. It gives me a more in-depth view of the other characters and helps me connect more with them as I come across them in the series.

THRILL ON JOYSEN HILL (Ivy Granger #5.5)

Torn is one of my favorite characters. I love his nonchalant “cattitude” and the fact that he is always hitting on Ivy and Jinx amuses me because they keep shutting him down.  But as you read more of the story, you get to see another facet of his personality. I hope to see more of his viewpoints in future stories.

You can read these stories as standalone but it helps if you read them in order so you can see how everything plays out and connects through the books.

I recommend this book and the other books in the series for urban fantasy lovers and people who love a strong female protagonist who shows definite growth as the series unfolds. Ivy starts out unsure of herself but as the books move forward so does she in her growth.

I give this book 5 Fairies for the solid intertwining of the stories with the current books in the series.

Jackrabbit Junction Mysteries by Ann Charles

Jackrabbit Junction Mysteries by Ann Charles
 The Rowdy Coyote Rumble
I wanted to give this series a try since I love Ann Charles’s work. I started my book review blog with her Nearly Departed in Deadwood Adventures with Violet Parker back in 2011. So I find it fitting to review another one of her series 5 years later.
The Jackrabbit Series has 4 books in it so far.
Dance of the Winnebagos
Jackrabbit Junction Jitters
The Great Jackalope Stampede
The Rowdy Coyote Rumble
This series is about the adventures of Claire Morgan and her rowdy sisters. This is a Women Sleuth Mystery and Romantic Suspense genre book series. Mystery and romantic suspense are not my usual genres to read but something about Claire’s adventures drew me in. I found the series very entertaining with just the right arc of mystery to keep me turning the pages in suspense.
I like the whirlwind romances of all the sisters and they have the right touch of stubbornness and realism in their courtships. I found myself laughing out loud at some of their antics, especially with Manny, Chester and Gramps. I love those guys as they remind me of my deceased grandfather and his siblings with some of the conversations they had when I was as kid. It brought back good memories for me of those times.
When I started reading the books, I found myself growing very fond of Claire and her courtship with Mac and her interaction with her Gramps and his cohorts. This book will have you laughing in tears with some of the one liners they throw out there. As well as Claire and her sisters, a lot of other quirky characters come in to play throughout the series and it makes me dream about what it would be like if these characters were actually real people and how much fun I would have interacting with them.
Claire is stubborn, willful, and a strong protagonist and I love all those qualities about her. It makes me smile to see some of her antics that she gets into. She means well and is always looking out for her family and that’s something that is a wonderful trait to read and experience. You can feel the love she has for her family even when they drive her crazy or land her in the local jail.
I would recommend this book for readers who like mystery and suspense with a lot of humor thrown in. This series will have you rolling around like a tumbleweed as you go from one mystery to another and leaves a smile on your face. You want to stand up and cheer for Claire and her family and shake your head in wonder when you see how they interact with one another.
I give this book series 5 fairies and look forward to reading about their Thanksgiving next!!!
Pick up your copy of this entertaining romp of a good time and take a few minutes and share your laughter that will inevitapbly come around once you start reading this series.
